Locating the Urosensor™ - Our solutions

Our suggested solution is placing the Urosensor™ into the underwear inside an appropriate, absorbent holder - that can effectively transfer urine to the sensing surface in the quickest time.

Ideally, it should be comfortable for the user whilst also making sure the sensor does not move or relocate, while the child is sleeping. Through our experience, testing, and customers solutions we have found the following methods work very well - choose one that suits you best:

Solutions for the DRI Eclipse® wireless bedwetting alarm:

Using a paper handkerchief:

Wrap the bedwetting alarm's Urosensor™ in a paper handkerchief (just a half a paper handkerchief will be sufficient) put on the underwear, then put the wrapped Urosensor™ inside the underwear just above the crotch area.

Using double-gusset underwear:

Using underwear which has a double gusset, cut a 1 inch slit through 1 layer only on the outside down towards the crotch area and insert the bedwetting alarm's Urosensor™ inside with the black sensing strips facing the user. Note: wrapping the Urosensor™ in paper handkerchief as in solution 1 can also help the bedwetting to be detected quicker.

Using a pants-liner:

The use of a pants-liner (or panty-liner) can be an off-putting idea for some boys. However it is merely a mini disposable product and no different in concept to a disposable diaper which is a solution many boys have no bother with using. However it is merely an option and has the advantage of providing a larger collecting area for the urine to “wick” onto the bedwetting alarm sensor. See below for how to best use this solution.

Solutions for the DRI Excel® wired bedwetting alarm:

Using a pants-liner:

The same method as described above for the DRI Eclipse® bedwetting alarm can be used for the DRI Excel's® Urosensor™. See below for more detail on using this bedwetting solution.
Bedwetting alarm Solution 4

Using double-gusset underwear:

Using underwear which has a double gusset, cut a 1 inch slit through 1 layer only on the inside down towards the crotch area and insert the Urosensor™ inside. Note: wrapping the bedwetting Urosensor™ in paper handkerchief as above, can also help the urine to be quickly absorbed onto the Urosensor's™ surface.
Bedwetting alarm Solution 5

Using two pairs of underwear:

For this solution, wear two pairs of close fitting underwear and put the Urosensor™, wrapped in a paper handkerchief or not wrapped, between the two pairs. This is a comfortable and popular approach for the bedwetter.

More detail - How to put the Urosensor™ into a pants-liner:

If the Urosensor™ of the bedwetting alarm is to be put inside a pants liner, (any inexpensive one will do, but avoid the very thin type, they can cause unreliable triggering), this is done by cutting a 1 inch slit in the absorbing layers towards the middle of the liner. Put the point of the scissors inside the slit, and moving them backwards and forwards and downwards, create a tunnel inside the absorbing layers so that you can slip the bedwetting sensor inside.

Although the Urosensor™ will usually stay inside the tunnel by itself, to get the best out of this solution and ensure that it does not pull or pop out, you can tape across the slit with sticky tape. With the slit facing upwards, the mini pad or pantyliner is stuck into the crotch of the underwear using the sticky back surface of the pantyliner or mini pad.

Further ideas:

Using the Urosensor™ in a pull-up

The Urosensor™ is suitable to use in a pull-up diaper. Some parents find this solution great for younger enuresis patients who wear diapers still. Simply cut a 1 inch (25 millimeters) slit in the pull-up in the crotch area, insert the point of the scissors into the slit, and moving the scissors from side to side, make a small tunnel into which you can insert the Urosensor™. To make sure that the Urosensor™ stays in place, it can be useful to tape across the slit once you have put the detector inside, as with the solution above for a minipad.

The covering layer of some pull-ups and minipad's can be designed to keep the user dry, and if the alarm Urosensor™ is placed just under that layer, the Urosensor™ may not trigger. If using this solution, it is best to insert the Urosensor™ under the layers of the absorbent material so that they will become wet and press onto the Urosensor™.

Some alarms have magnets, domes or clips to locate the sensor - are these a better solution?

No - through more than 30 years in development and testing, Anzacare has concluded that these methods don't give the best results. The most proven bedwetting solution is to use our tried and tested Urosensor™. Magnets, domes and clips all have a problem in common, they are metal. Metal in the presence of urine will corrode. Even more important, when metal touches the skin, in combination with the inadequate electronics of some alarms, this can cause a very significant skin irritation (a search online will reveal examples of this). The golden rule is: never use metal electrodes anywhere near skin. This is why Anzacare developed the unique, patented Urosensors™ which do not use metal and therefore cannot corrode or irritate the skin.

Apart from the problem of being metal, magnets may not hold it in place during sleep. They are simply not strong enough. Once these enuresis sensor's move, they become ineffective at detection, therefore we do not employ this system as part of our bedwetting solutions.

Dome and clip attachments are less effective because they tend to be smaller - urine often misses the sensing surface, especially with boys.

For all these reasons we developed our Urosensors™; they cannot corrode or irritate the skin, they are long enough and wide enough for the first amount of urine to trigger the bedwetting alarm, yet the right size to be comfortable and easy to position inside the underwear. With 30 years experience in treating enuresis, we believe this is the best bedwetting solution on the market today.
